Humanity’s Warmth: Providing Winter Relief Across Continents

Winter Relief

As the days shorten and a chill wind whispers across the globe, many of us find solace in warm homes, cozy blankets, and the comfort of shared meals. Yet, for millions across Palestine, Yemen, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and the vast continent of Africa, winter brings not comfort, but a harsh escalation of existing hardships. For them, the biting cold intensifies the struggles of displacement, poverty, and conflict, making the simple act of survival a daily battle. As a global community, our hearts must extend beyond our own warmth to aid those facing the biting realities of winter without adequate shelter, clothing, or food.

The Chill of Hardship and Urgent Needs

In Palestine, the ongoing humanitarian crisis is tragically compounded by the winter months. Families living in makeshift shelters or the rubble of their homes face freezing temperatures and relentless rain. As of January 2025, at least 1.9 million people—about 90% of Gaza’s population—are displaced, many repeatedly, and over a million Palestinians do not have sufficient shelter, with thousands living in small, overcrowded tents or makeshift structures.[^1] The blockade and restrictions on movement further hinder the delivery of essential aid, leaving countless vulnerable individuals, particularly children and the elderly, exposed to the elements. Their resilience in the face of adversity is awe-inspiring, but their need for warmth and support during these harsh months is critical.

Yemen, already ravaged by years of conflict and famine, experiences a cruel deepening of suffering with the arrival of winter. More than 4.5 million Yemenis remain internally displaced as of March 2025, and over 18.2 million people—more than half the population—are in dire need of humanitarian assistance.[^2] Displaced families, often residing in overcrowded camps, lack proper insulation and warm clothing, making them susceptible to respiratory illnesses and other cold-related ailments. The scarcity of resources and the ongoing instability make the provision of winter relief a complex and urgent undertaking. The innocent faces of children, shivering in the cold, serve as a stark reminder of our shared responsibility. It was estimated that over 900,000 vulnerable individuals were affected by extreme weather conditions during Yemen’s winter season.[^3]

Moving eastward, communities in Cambodia and Vietnam also grapple with the challenges of the colder season, particularly in rural and mountainous regions. While not experiencing the same level of conflict as Palestine or Yemen, poverty leaves many families without the means to afford adequate heating, warm clothing, and nutritious food to sustain them through the winter. In Cambodia, over 900,000 internal displacements linked to disasters have been recorded since 2008, with extreme weather events increasing in intensity.[^4] The vulnerability of these communities underscores the global reach of winter’s impact on those living on the margins. In Vietnam, while significant poverty reduction has occurred (poverty rate less than 4% in 2023 by World Bank standards), climate change is projected to affect millions more from coastal and fluvial flooding by 2070-2100, which compounds existing vulnerabilities to cold snaps, especially in northern regions where several cold fronts penetrate each winter.[^5]

The island nation of Sri Lanka, while often associated with tropical warmth, experiences cooler temperatures and increased rainfall in certain regions during its winter months. For low-income families and those in vulnerable situations, this shift can still lead to significant hardship with inadequate housing and limited access to resources. In April 2025, Sri Lanka’s poverty rate remained alarmingly high at 24.5%, with a significant portion of the population still struggling.[^6] Recent adverse weather, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, affected over 1,700 people from 485 families in May 2025, with 3 houses completely destroyed and 365 partially damaged, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability to seasonal shifts.[^7]

Across the vast and diverse continent of Africa, the impact of winter varies greatly depending on the region. Sub-Saharan Africa accounts for two-thirds of global extreme poverty, with one in six people living on less than $2.15 per day (as of April 2025).[^8] In highland areas and parts of Southern Africa, temperatures can drop significantly, posing serious risks to communities living in poverty. Lack of access to proper housing, blankets, and warm clothing can lead to illness and even death, especially among the most vulnerable populations. Recent severe winter storms in South Africa in June 2025 led to at least 49 deaths and hundreds of families seeking refuge in community centers, with extensive damage to power and water supply.[^9] These challenges are often exacerbated by limited infrastructure and logistical hurdles in reaching remote communities.

A Call to Compassion

In the face of such widespread need, our faith calls us to action. Islam emphasizes the importance of compassion, empathy, and supporting those in difficulty. The Quran frequently reminds us of the interconnectedness of humanity and the obligation to care for the vulnerable.

Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala says:

وَيُطْعِمُونَ الطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا “And they give food, despite [their] love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,” (Quran 76:8)

This verse highlights the virtue of giving even when we ourselves have a need or desire for what we offer. Providing warmth and sustenance during the harsh winter months exemplifies this selfless spirit of giving.

Furthermore, our faith teaches us that relieving the suffering of others is a path towards divine pleasure.

Allah states in the Quran:

مَا عِنْدَكُمْ يَنْفَدُ ۖ وَمَا عِنْدَ اللَّهِ بَاقٍ ۗ وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّ الَّذِينَ صَبَرُوا أَجْرَهُمْ بِأَحْسَنِ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ “Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is lasting. And We will surely give those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do.” (Quran 16:96)

This verse reminds us that our worldly possessions are transient, but the rewards for our good deeds, especially those done with patience and sincerity in the face of hardship, are eternal. Providing winter relief is an act of compassion that holds immense spiritual value.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of community and mutual support. He said: “The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are like one body. When one of the limbs suffers, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.” This Hadith beautifully illustrates the interconnectedness of the Ummah and the importance of feeling the pain of our brothers and sisters around the world.

Taking Action

As winter deepens its grip on these vulnerable communities, let us not remain indifferent to their plight. We have the capacity to extend a hand of warmth, offering vital resources such as blankets, warm clothing, food, and shelter. Every act of kindness, no matter how small it may seem, can bring hope and relief to a family struggling to survive the cold. Let our compassion be the warmth that transcends geographical boundaries, demonstrating the true spirit of humanity and our devotion to Allah.

Consider supporting organizations like El-Malja dedicated to providing winter relief in these affected regions. Your contribution can be a lifeline for those facing the harshest of conditions. Let us answer the call of compassion and work together to bring warmth and hope to those most in need this winter.
